Coherent x-ray imaging: how big can we go small?

Chris Jacobsen

Coherent x-ray imaging methods such as ptychography are developing rapidly and providing scientific insights. However, while X rays are well-known for being able to penetrate samples several millimeters thick, most coherent x-ray imaging has focused on studying specimens that are no more than about 10 micrometers in size. How large a sample can we study with nanometer resolution? Possible approaches, and possible imaging times, are shown for nanoscale imaging of millimeter or even centimeter-sized specimens.
