Adaptive Optics Transmission through Strong Turbulence

This work discusses techniques that have been developed to compensate the wavefront associated with a laser transmitting system or imaging system when turbulence is strong enough that scintillation plays a significant role in degrading performance. The techniques discussed that are capable of maintaining a high level of performance involve the use of branch cut reconstructors, enhanced control laws, and multi conjugate deformable mirrors. Performance results are presented for low elevation astronomy, relay mirror power beaming, and laser communication.
