A Hybrid Method for Kinetic Theory

Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) directly simulates the collision process in a rarefied gas and is the dominant method for simulation of rarefied gas dynamics. In the fluid dynamic limit (small Knudsen number), however, DSMC becomes computationally intractable, since the collision rate becomes large. We have developed a method that works uniformly over the full range of Knudsen numbers. It combines DSMC with a computational fluid dynamics method, by representing the velocity distribution function as a combination of a Maxwellian distribution and a set of discrete particles.
