I will review the basic resolution theory
of array imaging with Kirchhoff migration
(seismic, sonar, ultrasonic) and I will
then introduce coherent interferometric imaging,
which is the back propagation of local
space-time correlations of the array data.
I will explain why interferometry works well
in random media and I will present a resolution theory for this kind of imaging. I will then introduce the key decoherence or smoothing parameters that depend on the random medium, are needed for stable imaging, and are related to the resolution of the images. I will illustrate the theory and its limitations with the results of
extensive numerical simulations, including the
adaptive estimation of the decoherence parameters.
