Major new forces are reshaping the delivery of healthcare education. Technologies such as virtual reality, computer assisted education and objective assessment are revolutionizing the teaching and assessment of healthcare providers, especially in the procedural (surgery and interventional procedures) specialties. New methodologies for team training, communication skills, professionalism are now entering into the repertoire of educational requirements. Research in healthcare education is revealing new insights and requirements for training and clinical practice, such as pre-operative warm-up, surgical rehearsal, or "reset" training. National healthcare bodies, such as the American College of Surgeons, have established stringent criteria for certifying educational institutes. Not in 100 years has such a revolution occurred within the healthcare education community.
