Fluid-structure interaction in arterial blood flow: modeling, analysis and simulations

Understanding the fluid-structure interaction between blood flow and
arterial wall is crucial in understanding the mechanisms leading to
various
complications in cardiovascular function.
Many clinical treatments can only be studied in detail if a reliable
model
describing the response of arterial walls to pulsatile blood flow is
considered.

In this talk we present how devise mechanical models for the vascular
walls
which are simple enough so that they can be easily coupled and solved
with
the equations for the blood motion, and complicated enough so that we
can
obtain physiologically relevant solutions.
Moreover, we will present a new approach to the numerical solution of
the
fluid-structure interaction problem. This approach, called
kinematically coupled scheme, successfully combines the stability
properties of fully coupled schemes with the low computational cost of
loosely coupled
schemes.
