The Cauchy Problem for the Boltzmann Equation and Discrete Velocity Models: Revisiting Alternative Methods and Exploring "Old" Overgrown Avenues

The title says almost all. One of the side effects of the DiPerna- Lions result was that afterwards little attention was paid to previous attempts and methodology. This was understandable but is probably undeserved. In this talk I would like to revisit older approaches to discrete velocity models, for which there still is no general global existence theory in more than one space dimension. But there are some results. Can we do more?
