Lagrangian Modeling of Oceans and Atmospheres

Over the past decade, the speaker and collaborators have developed a new method for simulating circulations in oceans and atmospheres in which a fluid is represented as a pile of conforming parcels.
This talk will introduce the Lagrangian method, present idealized tests that illustrate its properties, and summarize oceanic and atmospheric applications completed to date. Special attention will be given to the unique treatment of convection, and the modeled behavior of atmospheric moist convective systems.
