The mathematics of queueing is a theory of the 20th century. It was invented to build the telephone system in 1917 and was used to design the forerunner of the internet in the 1960's. Today queueing theory has far-reaching applications to the management of services involving the limited leasing of shared resources.
The fundamental queueing models are introduced in this presentation.
They are motivated in the context of underlying communication systems and analyzed in terms of mathematical tools drawn from probability and stochastic processes.
