Evolving Ground Vehicle Autonomy at Virginia Tech

Alfred Wicks
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

The DARPA Grand Challenges, The Urban Challenge and the subsequent implementation of these technologies on military platforms has fully exposed the need for a paradigm shift in machine intelligence and learning. This presentation develops the history of these vehicles and the evolution of this technology at Virginia Tech, including the duel approach for Grand Challenge II where Cliff used a reactive behaviors and Rocky focused on the deliberative methods. The Urban Challenge featured behaviors for structured environments while the GUSS platform is required to operate in unstructured environments. Videos of some of the successes and failures of these efforts will be presented.
