As devices become smaller, the effect of thermal noise is becoming an increasingly important issue. In this talk we will use magnetic thin films as an example to discuss some of these issues. We will present numerical, experimental and theoretical results on thermally activated switching process. We will also present a new numerical method for computing the most probable switching pathways in such systems. We will end by discussing the issue of nucleation vs propagation in general Ginzburg-Landau systems.
