In this talk I will briefly go over the topics to be covered in the four subsequent workshops and in the tutorials. The two major themes are Materials Defects and Multiscale Modeling. I will give some examples of materials defects that illustrate how defects often spoil what would otherwise be a viable approach to modeling a given system, forcing consideration of a more detailed model. I will also spend some time explaining the basic features of four key modeling paradigms: quantum, molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo, and continuum scale models.
