Participation in graduate summer schools is by application only. This includes UCLA and local participants. Due to the nature of this program, all participants are expected to attend the entire summer school (July 15 – 27, 2024). Successful applicants will be awarded lodging (double occupancy) and funds for travel. Also, meals will be covered during the programmed events (i.e. not the weekend in between the program). All successful applicants will receive registration instructions and will pay a $100 registration fee.

In the application you will be asked to provide the name and email of a professor who will write a recommendation for you via a Google Form. Ideally, this will be a professor at your home institution whose research area is (related to) operator algebras, and who can speak to how you will benefit from GOALS and conversely how the program would be enhanced by your participation.
Here is a sample email that you can send to your professor ahead of time:

I am writing to request that you supply a recommendation to support my application to the 2024 Groundwork for Operator Algebras Lecture Series (GOALS) summer graduate school program to be held at the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) in UCLA, July 15 – 27, 2024.
GOALS is a two-week summer program, aimed at first- and second-year graduate students interested in operator algebras and related fields (e.g. noncommutative geometry, quantum information). At GOALS, participants will gain mathematical, professional, and interpersonal tools to help prepare them for successful careers in operator algebras. The application deadline is April 1, 2024 at 11:59pm PT.
